There have been many supposed second comings in the metal universe throughout the years, the one that springs to mind with the biggest shoes to fill must be Trivium - The Next Metallica.
Legends of metal and one of the original bands that were part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) movement, Iron Maiden have literally seen and done it all. They even have their own plane, painted in their colours & featuring their mascot Eddie in the design, and to top it off their singer Bruce Dickinson is a registered pilot so he can even fly the band himself. Originally started by guitarist Adrian Smith in the late 1970's, Iron Maiden have endured over thirty years to become one of the most successful metal bands of all time.
They have released countless successful albums, headlined arena and stadium tours all over the world and headlined every noteworthy hard rock and metal festival on the planet, including Germany's Wacken Open Air, Monsters of Rock and its successor Download in the UK and Brazil's Rock in Rio, which was the sight for one of the band's finest performances and the basis for their live Rock in Rio album, arguably one of the finest live rock or metal albums in the last twenty years. Showing no signs of slowing down, Iron Maiden are both a British and a heavy metal institution.
Last night brought us Iron Maiden. Tonight brings us Black Sabbath. The forefathers of heavy metal have been confirmed as the headline act for Download Festival 2016's Saturday night, confirming something that has been speculated on by fans and media for weeks.
Jump in the cockpit and start up the engines! Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson will be flying high above the Sonisphere Festival skies on Saturday 5th July as part of The Great War Display Team who will stage a 12 minute air display at approximately 6PM.
As part of the 40 anniversary of Knebworth House, Sonisphere has announced numerous celebration events in the build up to the 2014 UK edition of the festival – Classic Album Sundays, Knebworth Exhibition, as well as a Knebworth Tribute event. Celebration events will take place both before and during Sonisphere Festival 2014.
It's the news that brought the Sonisphere website to it's knees, yes my friends, it was the eager awaited announcement of Iron Maiden & Metallica (by request) as the first headliners at the 2014 Sonisphere Festival!
Lars had the following to say on the whole affair:
Having covered the trials and tribulations of arriving at Donington straight from the end of the working week, learning ones way around the village and most importantly seeing a few bands (read day one's report if you missed it), day two of Download was then upon our roving reporter. Over to you once again Mr Gillies....
