Sunday Top Picks
Final Download day, and it’s an absolute corker!
A big slot as sub-headliners on mainstage for Alter Bridge and one that could potentially catapult them to headliner the status in the future – which would be a much deserved accolade for one of Rock’s most hard working and respected bands. We’re anticipating great things from AB who always bring it in the live arena. Quite frankly only a fool would miss them.
In a rather bizarre series of events, Trivium’s road to Download 2014 has hardly been plain sailing. The band recently and rather unexpectedly axed their drummer Nick Augusto (who replaced Travis Smith in 2010) and then were forced to cancel remaining dates on their U.S tour with Volbeat due to Matt Heafy blowing out his voice. In light of these events the planned 05 setlist that the band was set to include has been amended somewhat. Download and the UK has always been great for these guys and is regularly referred to as their second home, so vocal problems and new drummer aside, we have every faith that their headliner slot on second stage will be a night remember.
For some reason the UK has been somewhat sluggish in jumping on the Volbeat train, whereas over in Mainland Europe they have enjoyed mega popularity – even headlining Rock AM Ring last year! This year sees the band make their Mainstage debut (after playing second stage 3 times in a row) and will no doubt further bolster their popularity in the UK. Outlaw Gentlemen and Shady Ladies – get ready!
Steel Panther need no introduction! Expect top notch on-stage banter, the Lexxi Foxx Pout and Swarovski encrusted pretty mirror, plus hair solo (It’s all about the hair solo folks!), hilarious one liners, and probably some of the best lyrics you’ll hear all weekend. Hail to the panthers! And hopefully Satchel will yell “Fxck You Plane” to another Ryan Air flight, as witnessed at Download 2012!
For the Power Metal, Battle Metal and History lovers, Sabaton too make their Download festival debut having already conquered Hammerfest, Sonisphere and Bloodstock in years gone by. If you’re not familiar with them, pretty much all of their songs have a bit of a war theme to them singing about various battles. It’s good stuff honest! Just listen to ‘Ghost Division’! The band recently released a brand new album titled ‘Heroes’ featuring the bands new line-up just under a month ago so expect to hear new songs thrown into the mix too!
A potential extra highlight, announced on Twitter by Andy himself, an undisclosed Secret Band will play at the same time as Volbeat on the third stage. The only clue is that they are an arena sized band. Place your bets people! The big rumour over on Download Festival forums is that the secret band will be Black Stone Cherry due to their appearance the following day at Metal Hammer Awards, others have suggested the likes of Pearl Jam, Bullet For My Valentine, Bon Jovi and Machine Head. Definitely worth checking out and then maybe running to catch Volbeat or Sabaton if it’s not your desired band of choice!
Sweden’s Avatar could be another to watch after impressing on Avenged Sevenfold’s arena tour last year. They will open on second stage! Look out for eccentric frontman Johannes Eckerstrom who looks a bit like V from V For Vendetta complete with hat and cane! You can’t go far wrong with The Used either especially when it comes to tracks like ‘Bird and the Worm’, ‘The Taste of Ink’ and ‘Pretty Handsome Awkward’. They will play the Pepsi Max tent from 8PM. Lastly, Virtuoso Blues Guitarist Joe Bonamassa is another good shout if you’re after some seriously mind-blowing guitar playing!
